Post-Polio Orthotics

improved comfort for prolonged use

CHALLENGE

Prompt: A patient has polio of the left leg, and the quadriceps do not function properly. Utilizing knowledge on the anatomy and the gait, design a
prosthetic/orthotic device for this patient.

Labyrinth

An anatomically redesigned over-the-ear headphone for improved comfort and prolonged use.

Project Type. Product Design. Anatomy.

Project Brief. By focusing on human biology and ergonomic principles, the project aimed to create a product that provides superior comfort, reduces strain, and improves the overall listening experience for users.

Project Overview. Labyrinth headphones are engineered with a deep understanding of human anatomy to deliver an unparalleled audio experience. The design emphasizes ergonomic features that adapt to the natural contours of the human ear and head, minimizing discomfort during extended periods of use. Through innovative materials and advanced design techniques, Labyrinth offers a seamless blend of comfort and functionality, setting a new standard for headphone design.

The Gait

The quadriceps play a crucial role in maintaining stability and controlling movement during the various phases of walking, known as the gait cycle.

During the single-leg stance phase, when one leg is planted, the quadriceps contract to stabilize the upper leg and knee, helping to prevent the leg from buckling. They also assist in bending the hip and extending the knee.

The quadriceps help absorb some of the impact of walking by adjusting the amount of knee flexion, which affects how much the body sinks downward upon landing (vertical oscillation).

Muscle contraction types:

  • Eccentric contractions occur when the muscle lengthens under force, such as during heel strike, when the quadriceps eccentrically contract to control the knee.

  • Concentric contractions occur when the muscle shortens while producing tension, as seen during flat foot loading, when the quadriceps concentrically contract.

  • During midstance and terminal stance, the quadriceps are minimally active, with the hamstrings primarily engaged.

  • In the swing phase of walking:

    • During initial and mid-swing, the quadriceps eccentrically contract to control the knee.

    • In late swing, the quadriceps are not actively engaged.

Physical Therapy Exercise

CHALLENGE

Exercise and strengthen affected muscles without fatiguing them.

Screenshot 2024-02-22 at 8.11.48 PM.png

The key lies in striking a delicate balance between exercising affected muscles without over-fatiguing them, as excessive fatigue can worsen their function. Research on physical therapy methods consistently emphasizes the importance of avoiding excessive fatigue.

Design Considerations:

A more ergonomic shape that conforms to the curvature of the pinna could reduce pressure points and improve comfort.
